Thornbury Food Fairs
You have four chances to enjoy Thornbury's Food Fairs in 2010: see the calendar on the right for details.
Bringing together the best of local producers with members of the popular Thursday Farmers Markets and also stallholders from the highly successful Slow Food Market in Bristol, Thornbury's Food Fairs provide a wide range of fresh produce to suit all tastes.
There are ample opportunities to sample stallholders’ wares, with hot food and refreshments available.
Not only are these fairs a great chance to stock up on delicious food, you can also meet up with friends and neighbours for a chat and a cup of tea.
So come along and join us - you’ll be amazed by all the wonderful things our area has to offer.
The Food Fairs are organised by Thornbury Chamber of Commerce.
We loved the Food Fair! It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the lovely weather and experiencing the best of Thornbury. (Perry)
The Food Fair dates are arranged to coincide with other local events, such as the Thornbury Arts Festival in Spring, the South Gloucestershire Food Festival in September and Christmas Craft Fairs in December.
Because of this, the fairs attract both Thornbury residents and visitors from further afield, who are all welcome.
Many of Thornbury's shopkeepers enter into the spirit of the Food Fairs, with promotions and offers in throughout the town.
So avoid the Bristol queues, buy something individual, and support your local market town - think Thornb`ury first!

Thornbury’s Food Market was superb in terms of its setting, variety of stalls and atmosphere. Having a young family, we were happy in the knowledge that they were safe wandering around. We much prefer having the opportunity to buy fresh local produce rather than filling the pockets of supermarkets. Also, we feel it encourages a stronger community environment and provides a platform for people to take pride in their surroundings. (Julian)

Wow - what a great day that was. (Jonathan)
Butterfly Space
One of the stallholders at Thornbury's Food Fair is Butterfly Space, a volunteer community project in Nkhata Bay, Malawi, set up and run by Thornbury's Alice Leaper.
The money you spend at their stall helps them develop Butterfly as a unique community space; bringing together Malawians and passionate tourists.
Alice has built a Nursery School, runs a Youth Club, works with Albinos, HIV victims and Special Needs children.
She has set up widows' sewing groups and has built four adventure playgrounds, as well as supporting the outpatients department at the local hospital.
Alice wants soon to purchase a boat ambulance and from it set up cervical screening tests in the villages on the lakeside. She would also like to set people up with raising chickens and eggs as well as soap making and paper making.
Her ideas to support the local community are endless, and she is always looking for volunteers to help in a variety of ways.

New House Farm is a small dairy farm of 140 acres in Tytherington, Gloucestershire. It is run by Bill, Richard and Tom Cornock, and has been in the Cornock family since the 1840s. In a beautiful and diverse collection of photographs, A Year on a Farm captures the day to day workings of a family-run farm in the south Gloucestershire countryside. Tree planting, hedge laying, ploughing fields, planting maize, making hay, calving cows, picking fruit: these are all activities which make up the farming year, set against the striking changing landscape of the region.
As well as depicting the various activities which make up farming life, A Year on a Dairy Farm introduces the characters that make it happen, and the animals, farm, domestic and wild, which are the lifeblood of the farm. Originally intended as a very personal book for immediate family only, A Year on a Farm is a perfect record of what makes a dairy farm tick at all times of the year and in all weathers.
