Who We Are

Thornbury WI was re-formed in 2010, since then the “Thorn Birds” have evolved into a friendly sociable group of women of all ages.

We like to try new activities and listen to a variety of speakers, we enjoy meeting new friends, and having fun.

Meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 7.30–9.30pm at Thornbury Methodist Hall.

Guests are always welcome. Annual membership costs £34.70.

Thornbury WI also offers extra social and educational events throughout the year and the opportunity to support and be involved in local and community events.

Our Latest Meeting

President Di Wood opened the meeting held on 17th June 2014 by checking that all members and visitors were aware of the fire regulations. The ‘Thornbirds’ newsletter was handed out together with copies of Avon News. Gill Blackborough took ticket money for our outing to see War Horse at Bristol Hippodrome, and Jane Hayward sold NFWI raffle tickets together with our normal raffle tickets.

Di went onto remind members about volunteering for tea, coffee and hostess duties. Members were asked if they had received a copy of minutes for May, and if they were a true and accurate record. Di continued to inform members that the Christmas Social had been booked for Friday 12th December in The Orangery at Tortworth Court. Places were still available for the Dragon Boat Taster Day on Friday 19th July. A Wine Tasting Evening will be taking place at Turnberries on Tuesday 5th August - tickets approx £10.00 to include a light supper. All the tickets for a visit to Highgrove on 31st July had been taken.

Sue Horsfall continued by informing members about Thornbury Carnival on Saturday 5th July. We would be taking part in the parade and the dress code was red, white and blue (red scarves had been purchased and would be handed to members on arrival). The parade would be leaving Castle School Field at 10.30am. The cake stall would be set up early in the morning and members were asked if they could deliver cakes the previous day to either Di or Gill. Help would be needed to sell cakes between 12.00 noon and 5.00 pm. Proceeds from the stall would go to our charity of the year ‘Brain Tumour Support’.

Our speaker for the evening was David Swinson from Westonbirt Arboretum. David gave us an interesting and varied account of how the arboretum came about and how it was run today.

Di gave a vote of thanks and the raffle was drawn and coffee was served.

Our next meeting takes place on 15th July at 7.30 pm at the Methodist Church Hall, when our speaker will be Marie Marfleet who will instruct us on Self Defence ’Defend the Life you Want to Live’. Guests are always welcome.
