The Chantry is a fine listed building located in the conservation area of Castle Street, Thornbury. It dates from the late 16th/early 17th Century. Thornbury Allotment Association
Daggs Allotments are at the top of the High Street, and are administered and run for the people of Thornbury by Thornbury Town Trust.

Thomas Dagg gave the field to Thornbury in 1546, so we tend what must be some of the oldest allotments in the country.

There are 120 allotments, and the Association has over 100 members. It organises social events such as the Summer BBQ, the Autumn Talk, the Christmas Meal as well as distributing monthly newsletters, running the Allotment Shop and offering discounts to some local retailers.

Gillingstool Primary School has a large plot which offers all pupils the opportunity to grow and eat their own produce.

Membership costs just a couple of pounds a year, and brings many benefits. You don't need to be a plot holder to become a member. We have discounted seeds, competitive prices on gardening items, guest speakers and visits.

If you would like to become a member, or be added to the waiting list for a plot, click the website link below.

Thornbury Christmas Lights Association
The Christmas Lights Association was formed in 1991 with the sole purpose of continuing the provision of a Christmas Lights display in Thornbury.
It supports a small band of volunteers who give their time in all winds and weathers to maintain, repair, erect and take down the lights display that Thornbury has enjoyed for countless years!
We believe this to be of the order of 700 man hours of effort. The electricity for those fittings, is provided and hence ‘donated’ by the individual businesses. When not in use the fittings are stored at a local premises free of charge. In the true sense, this is a community led and funded display.
The lights display is renowned both locally and further afield. It draws numerous visitors to the town over the festive period. Many Councils have to pay a commercial rate for the provision of their lights display. Thornbury’s comes for free!
For more information, please contact the Secretary Gill Dunkley on O1454 281801 or by email below.

Thornbury Forum
Thornbury now has a non-commercial place for people who work, live, shop and go to school in Thornbury to discuss and debate local, national and global issues, and experiment with direct and participatory democracy.
Inspired by the Occupy Movement, several people who live in Thornbury and the surrounding villages decided to approach the Thornbury Methodist Church in search of such a space. Reverend Peter Hatton and his church council were very enthusiastic about offering their hall to the Thornbury community.
The idea is that people can drop by during Forum opening times, bring their lunch (if it's a lunchtime session), and meet others. Coffee and tea is freely available.
This is an exciting opportunity to bring together many issues and people to used joined-up thinking to work on solutions together.

Volunteer Centre Thornbury
We have lots of opportunities in the local area from visiting elderly people for a cup of tea and a chat to helping organise exhibitions for the local museum, from driving to gardening and from offering advice to working with children.
Volunteering is the ideal way to gain work experience and make new friends. It allows you to try different things and improves self-confidence. In some cases it can lead to paid employment. Mostly though, it should be enjoyable and enriching, helping you to feel worthwhile whilst helping others lead a better quality of life.
Whatever your experience, interests or time available we will do our best to find you a satisfying, worthwhile and enjoyable volunteering opportunity. We look forward to hearing from you!

Silver Jubilee Exhibition
Thornbury and District Museum, Chapel Street, Thornbury

This exhibition runs from 5 November 2011 to April 2012, and the Museum is open 1pm-4pm Tuesday to Friday, and 10am-4pm on Saturdays.

In November 2011, the museum celebrated its 25th birthday and we are having a special Silver Jubilee Exhibition to mark the occasion. We have been busy choosing 25 objects (or groups of objects) which aren't normally on show and which we think give a taste of the museum's collection. It's been hard whittling it down to 25! The chosen objects will be on display throughout the museum, encouraging you to explore each room.

We don't want to give too much away but here are some hints of what you can expect to see....

... parts of the Littleton Whale of 1885.

... the link between Mary Bruton (whose collection of local historical objects formed the core of our museum collection) and Donald Campbell, land and water speed record breaker.

...the Little and Large of the bible world.

... and the device which prevented crashes on the Yate to Thornbury railway line.

Friday 9th March 2012
Thornbury Rotary Annual Swimarathon
Evenings of Friday, Saturday and Sunday 9th, 10th and 11th March, Thornbury Leisure Centre

Proceeds this year will be shared by Cancer Research UK, Meningitis UK and local charities, and other good causes.
Last year some £15000 was raised from swimming teams and industrial sponsors, of which £4000 went to each of SSAFA and the National Autistic Society, our main charities then.
As is our custom we run up to 12 lanes of swimmers swimming in relay for as many lengths as they can, in 55 minutes. The swimmers seek sponsorship from relatives, friends and colleagues, which they then collect for the benefit of the organisations identified above.
We organise several sessions each evening as required, 3 on Friday starting at 6.15, 7.15, and 8.15 pm. and 2 each on Saturday and Sunday at 7.15 and 8.15pm.
Get up a team (normally up to 6), join us at one of the sessions above and have a great time. The atmosphere is terrific, reinforced by the rhythm of the Castle School Steel Band.
Detail information and application forms etc from our website below or from Brian Lowrie, 10 Chestermaster Close, Almondsbury BS32 4EH, tel 01454 613361 or email below.
