We have been granted charitable status as our role in providing information, especially to immigrants to this country has become more apparent. We have also been praised by independent assessors for the educational aspect of our work.
We work where the need is greatest, regardless of religion, through local organisations in more than 50 of the world's poorest countries. At home and overseas, Christian Aid campaigns to change the structures that keep people poor, challenging inequality and injustice.
The West office in Thornbury supports the work of hundreds of churches and thousands of volunteers in Bristol, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Thomas Dagg gave the field to Thornbury in 1546, so we tend what must be some of the oldest allotments in the country.
There are 120 allotments, and the Association has over 100 members. It organises social events such as the Summer BBQ, the Autumn Talk, the Christmas Meal as well as distributing monthly newsletters, running the Allotment Shop and offering discounts to some local retailers.
Gillingstool Primary School has a large plot which offers all pupils the opportunity to grow and eat their own produce.
Membership costs just a couple of pounds a year, and brings many benefits. You don't need to be a plot holder to become a member. We have discounted seeds, competitive prices on gardening items, guest speakers and visits.
If you would like to become a member, or be added to the waiting list for a plot, click the website link below.

It supports a small band of volunteers who give their time in all winds and weathers to maintain, repair, erect and take down the lights display that Thornbury has enjoyed for countless years!
We believe this to be of the order of 700 man hours of effort. The electricity for those fittings, is provided and hence ‘donated’ by the individual businesses. When not in use the fittings are stored at a local premises free of charge. In the true sense, this is a community led and funded display.
The lights display is renowned both locally and further afield. It draws numerous visitors to the town over the festive period. Many Councils have to pay a commercial rate for the provision of their lights display. Thornbury’s comes for free!

Volunteering is the ideal way to gain work experience and make new friends. It allows you to try different things and improves self-confidence. In some cases it can lead to paid employment. Mostly though, it should be enjoyable and enriching, helping you to feel worthwhile whilst helping others lead a better quality of life.
Whatever your experience, interests or time available we will do our best to find you a satisfying, worthwhile and enjoyable volunteering opportunity. We look forward to hearing from you!

10pm, The Chantry, Castle Street, Thornbury
The Thornbury and District Community Association invite you to a day of exciting events.
During the day, from 10 till 4, The Chantry is again taking part in a Heritage Open Day, when many of Thornbury’s historic buildings are open to the public for free. Come along and learn about the fascinating history of our building, parts of which date back to Tudor times. Trustee Chris Davis will be giving an illustrated talk on the building, and the Thornbury Museum will also have a display - or you can just look round the premises and the splendid garden at your own pace. If you’re not familiar with The Chantry, this is the chance to get to know a significant part of Thornbury’s heritage.
During the afternoon and early evening we will be holding a Wine Festival, which we hope will please both the connoisseur, and those who just like an occasional glass. This will lead, convivially, into our main event of the day, our Proms in the Chantry Garden. There will be a string quartet to entertain you, (from 7-30 for just over an hour) and, when the time comes, we will screen the final part of BBC’s Last Night of the Proms (on a large TV screen). Wear something red, white and blue and sing along to patriotic favourites such as Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory. There will be a small charge for the evening of £5 a head (£3 for children) for what should be an unforgettable night out.

7pm, Thornbury High Street
Thornbury Christmas Lights Association has set the date for this year’s illumination switch-on ceremony, which will be on TUESDAY 16 NOVEMBER.
As usual the High Street and surrounding areas will be transformed for the festive season and thanks to the continuing financial support of local businesses and both South Gloucestershire and Thornbury Town Councils, it will again be possible to improve the lighting displays and further pursue the conversion to energy efficient light sources.
Thanks to Thornbury Chamber of Commerce, the Christmas Fair, with its emphasis on seasonal food, will again operate on switch-on night in Castle Street where both traders and local charities and organizations will be invited to set up their stalls.
The Association has chosen the newly re-formed Thornbury Castle Band as this year’s switch-on beneficiary.
As ever, because everything is done by volunteers and because work can only take place on Sundays, it will be necessary to start work on the erection of the displays in October and as ever, more help is needed. Anyone able to give up a few Sunday mornings should contact Brian Roberts on 01454 260330 or 415445.
