Round Table – the more you put in the more you get out
A note to potential members:
We would like to let all 18-45 year old men know that Thornbury Round Table is currently recruiting new members and Thornbury Tablers want to let you all know what Tabling is all about.
You may not know that Round Table is not just about charity work (a common misconception)- we actually spend 80%+ of our time undertaking other activities. Some examples of what we have done in the last 18 months are: ten pin bowling, laser quest, clay pigeon shooting, a race night, canoeing, boules, wine tasting, golf, bike ride, pub games, go karting, tractor driving, Superfish x2 (ask us for more details), sherman tank visit, brewery visit(s), comedy club, tubing/skiing, Red Arrows dinner, bonfire preparation and a Caribbean evening. As you can see, we get around!
Whilst it may seem time-consuming to be in Table, all members do as much or as little as they are able to. We are all very busy people, and we all know family and our jobs come first, so we know not everyone will be at every event. All we ask is that you aim to come along to 15 or so of the 24 events we do each year.
The fundraising we do with our bouncy castle, popcorn machine, fireworks and Santa's float is mainly done at a weekend and most of the Tablers families get involved as they enjoy it too.
See our events on the right; as a potential member/guest, there is no cost to you for an event, so if you are interested, please get in touch.
Misconceptions
Often people are uncertain as to what Round Table is all about - it's not a secret society, a charity fundraising club or the local darts team! What it is, is a group of guys under 45 who enjoy an active social life, undertaking activities that many people would love to get involved in. Whilst they are a men's organisation, they include partner and family activities in the programme, thus giving a more wide-ranging appeal.
Passionate about the community
Tablers feel very fortunate to be part of their local community, and as their way of putting something back, they participate in helping others and fundraising. They reckon this takes up 10-20% of their activities, depending on requirements, but this can often be the most rewarding part of what they do. It can range from collecting money with the Christmas Sleigh, running the community firework event or participating in a sponsored event.
Employers and Round Table
Many employers now see the significant benefits from having employees in Round Table. Many business and life skills are developed and honed through the numerous 'jobs' which can be held at Table, Area or National level. Area Chairmen often have to run meetings with over 100 people and this gives confidence and the ability to address large groups, especially as Tablers don't sit there quietly! Table Chairmen learn to motivate and encourage their Table in the same way a manager would have to run his team. Round Table is also seen as a good way of settling employees into new areas if they move with their job – there's always a local Table and a group of 'like minded' friends to help you and your family settle in.
The bigger picture
There are currently over 750 Round Tables grouped into 50 Areas, covering Great Britain and Ireland, and they are represented in over 100 countries around the World. The great strength and appeal lies in that fact that they are a local organisation with a Global reach. This was perfectly demonstrated when the Tsunami struck India and Sri Lanka in 2004 where there are several Round Tables. The local Tablers immediately set about helping the local people and Round Tables around the world sent money and manpower to assist them. Round Table in the UK sent nearly £300,000 with the first money arriving shortly after the disaster occurred.
Local activities
Round Table is a non-political, non-sectarian organisation based in the local community. Clubs (called Tables) around Great Britain and Ireland operate around an activity-based programme and participate in everything from white water rafting and gliding to speaker nights and quiz evenings. The great thing about joining Table is often these events are organised by a member or a team of members, which means all you have to do is turn up and enjoy them. It is these activities that often attract people to the organisation, which is open to all men between the ages of 18-45.
Meetings
Thornbury Round Table meets twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. Often there are other activities going on around these and are optional, depending on what you are looking for. For instance Round Table in an adjoining town may have a meeting that interests you, or an Area event which can involve members of many other Tables eg an inter-Table sporting challenge.
