Thornbury Carnival 2010
Thornbury's 2010 Carnival will be held on on Saturday 3rd July.
The 2009 Carnival was a great success, with a Parade including 1000+ people, and a crowd of 11,000 on the Mundy Playing fields to see the wide range of entertainment and attractions, highlighted by the Red Arrows and the Band of the Light Cavalry, and the 130 stalls on offer.
In 2010, the Parade will be bigger and there will be a wider range of stalls, including a marquee for fine crafts and foods, as well as an even better range of attractions, the highlight of which, we hope, will be the Vulcan Bomber.

A Medley of Musical Offerings from the Thornbury Carnival
“This year’s Carnival is set to provide a musical spectacular for the folk of Thornbury and the surrounding areas” David Goldring, Thornbury Carnival Association Chairman
Amidst fierce competition from other events around the country, TCA chairman David Goldring has, so far, secured no less than eleven musical groups to entertain the crowds on both the parade route and Carnival Field.
Heading the Parade will be one of the country’s leading military bands, the Central Band of the RAF. Its thirty nine members will be familiar to many from their concert in Olveston Church last year and Thornbury Carnival is thrilled to introduce them to audience members who missed their prior performance.
We will also be joined by the Westbury ATC Drum Corps and the Corps of Drums from the Gloucestershire ACF, as the Cadet movement celebrates ‘Cadet 150’ throughout 2010, marking the 150th anniversary of the cadet movement.
There will be an additional stage on the Carnival Field this year to accommodate the increase in musical attractions. Although the stages will not be programmed exclusively for music, some of the on-stage highlights will include Thornbury’s full Orchestra, conducted by Chris Hill and the Thornbury Castle Band under the baton of new Director of Music, Geraint Barnes.
Adding a different musical flavour will be a Caribbean Melody Steel Band from Birmingham, who have already secured a future booking for a local wedding through their involvement in the Carnival.
Familiar faces from the Carnival in 2009 include the Nailsworth Silver Band and Irish folk group ‘Mo, Mac ‘n’ Me’. They will be joined in the line-up by new faces including the Concorde Saxophone Quartet, City of Bristol Pipes and Drums.
Finally, Castle School will have a major presence on the day, with many of its young musicians performing in their Salsa Band, Steel Band and Gospel Choir.
There is still scope for buskers and small groups of entertainers to perform in the Town before the Parade passes through. Submissions are invited from any party who may be suitable, so please get in touch.
Thornbury Carnival Enters Cyberspace
The Thornbury Carnival now has its own Blog and Twitter page.
In its second year the Thornbury Carnival Association will be looking at new ways to engage with supporters, old and new, in the months running up to Thornbury Carnival 2010 and beyond.
Steve Poole, the former Publicity Manager, did a fantastic job last year and we intend to follow in his footsteps, continuing to work with those who previously supported our endeavour.
However, our second year requires us to build on this foundation, to develop and extend our work and support; therefore, we have become part of the online community.
We now have Thornbury Carnival blog and a Twitter page.
The Blog is in the process of being built and will eventually be a place where those unfamiliar with the Carnival and its history can discover what it’s all about, and find interviews and articles with those involved.. Details of any offers and promotions will also be announced on the blog.
@ThornburyCarn has just started to tweet about the progress of both the blog and the Carnival, and provides another way for people to keep up to date with what is happening. We have already received a positive response:
"...We are looking forward to being a part of the carnival day again this year :)”, Cats Whiskers Face Painting (@CatsWhiskersFP)
Since many members of the physical community are also members of the online community, they are now able to connect to the Carnival via the internet and this creates an improved flow of information to those in the locality, in addition to enabling the participation of interested parties from further afield.
"The committee is very excited by the possibilities created by our new Carnival blog. It will enable us to reach more people than ever before." David Goldring, Thornbury Carnival Association Chairman
