8pm: Thornbury Country Music Club
Armstrong Hall, Thornbury

Nancy Vowles writes: "After a very long wait since September 2011, when the organisers and myself had first seen this duo for the very first time. That was when they came down to the Trade Fair held annually ever August Bank Holiday weekend. Clearwater was a hit with the audience then and still entertained the crowds at Thornbury CMC this last April a very special post Easter treat.
The duo of husband and wife (Wendy & David) certainly drew different people to attend. We had even welcomed a couple from Torquay, who was staying locally. (Please don’t forget to visit us again; sorry I had forgotten your names). It was pleasure to hear artists who could cover not only the well known country tracks, such as ‘Ring of Fire, Smokey Places, Trail of Tears, Tempted, Sea of Heartbreak. But also to cover the country music that is often heard at the line dancer’s classes as ‘Disappearing Tail Lights, Don’t Tell Me You are Not In Love, Cowboy & a Dance, White Rose all too many... Sunday 7th July 2013
1pm: Thornbury Area Music Centre "Scratch Orchestra"
Castle School, Thornbury

The 'scratch orchestra' day is an opportunity for players of orchestral instruments to come together and rehearse music in a single day for a concert that evening. The theme of the day is 'hits from the movies' so there will be lots of recognisable and fun pieces.

Rehearsals will be from 1-6:30pm (with regular breaks), and we will be performing at 7:30pm at Castle School.

There will be a number of pieces to learn and play, including Pirates of the Caribbean and lots of others you'll know and recognise.

We would like to get as many people performing with us as possible that day so if you've got some friends who play an orchestral instrument (strings, brass, wind or percussion) who can play to a standard approaching grade 5, make sure you let them know about it.

The day is open to musicians across Gloucestershire and Bristol.

The cost of the day will be £15 and enrolment forms are available - e mail below. We would be grateful if these could be returned by Sunday June 9th so... Read more >>

3pm: Pantagruel present: ‘Nymphidia’ The Court of Faerie
Acton Court

Phantastical Ballads, Ayres & Dances from Elizabethan England

The Phantastical in cinema, art and literature is due in no small part to the Tudor monarchs. Henry VIII claimed to be a descendant of King Arthur, and Elizabeth I revelled in her image as Gloriana in ‘The Faerie Queen’.

“Nymphidia” takes the listener on a journey that begins with Christopher Marlowe’s “Come live with me and be my love”, the ballad that introduced the idea of England’s idyllic pastoral image, and ends with supernatural songs from William Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’.

The programme also includes a number of John Dowland’s finest compositions in honour of his 450th anniversary. Pantagruel is known for its arrangements of Broadside Ballads often combined with spoken word from the period.

Anna Maria Wierod’s pure and vividly dramatic voice combined with Mark Wheeler and Paulina van Laarhoven on authentic reproductions of Tudor Instruments, lutes, cittern, gitterns & Viols,... Read more >>
