Helping Hands Bereavement Coffee Morning Group

Held every 3rd Thursday each month, 10.30 – 1pm, Helping Hands Bereavement Coffee Morning Group offers a space where we can relax from some of the pressure points in life; our goal is to promote wellbeing after loss. You can enjoy a hot or cold drink and connect with others, giving you the opportunity to talk, share or just listen to others' experiences of losing a loved one. This will be a monthly event to help you on your grieving journey and the chance to meet new people.

After the loss of someone we can often feel isolated, not able to talk within friendship circles about our loss, this can have a negative impact on wellbeing, sometimes we might struggle with practical things like cooking, simple DIY or gardening, and there are others just wanting to connect with others on the grieving journey in need of sharing skill sets and stories.

If you are able to help, making drinks or washing up please contact Del on 07796 190794 or by email below. We are aware not everyone wants to share their grief but just being a part of something can help. Please pop in and ask for details.

We are not a counselling service provider; this is a volunteering group to help facilitate and support bereaved people within the community. Please respect others' privacy in the group, by keeping any conversations shared strictly confidential. We want everyone to feel safe, relaxed, and able to talk freely in this space.

Mums’ Comfort Zone is a structured, 11 week, therapeutic, group programme for mums experiencing ante and post-natal, depression and/or anxiety and can be accessed by completing a referral form and having an initial assessment with the Bluebell Buddy.
Group sessions last for 2 hours and are term timely during school hours. Courses usually run 3 times a year with start dates in January, April and September.
Our Bluebell Buddies have lived experience of managing depression and anxiety related to pregnancy and birth and can offer 1:1 support in the community or at another local convenient community venue.
Support is available for dads from our ‘Dads in Mind’ peer support workers, who can meet for a 1-2-1 chat.

Happiness Circles

These are small groups of people willing to understand, practise and maintain the skills of happiness.  The power is through group process, self-commitment and journaling leading to ongoing maintenance networks using for example, creative visual journalling.
Current for Thornbury community, these offer two hourly sessions weekly for six weeks in small interactive groups with donations.  After that the network widens and meets monthly when the focus shifts to creating a visual journal to support and maintain learning and practice.

Haven Memory Café at the URC

Haven Memory Cafe offers a warm welcome to people diagnosed with memory problems or dementia, along with a relative, friend or carer. It meets in a comfortable setting in the centre of Thornbury, in the United Reformed Church building.

It provides a welcoming social atmosphere, with tea, coffee and home-made cake, and an opportunity to chat to friends and volunteers. At each session there is a short activity, which is often musical, usually with an invitation to join in, or a demonstration or slide-show. NB The cafe is not a clinic, though there is often a Dementia Support Worker present.

The Memory Cafe usually meets on the first and third Friday mornings of each month, from 10.15am - 11.45am. The entrance is in Chapel Street, and is accessible to mobility scooters. There is car parking around the church, although it is often busy on a Friday morning.

We are back operating as normal in the United Reformed Church on Friday mornings. The programme still features a singalong with Lizzie & Jonny in alternate sessions.

Thornbury Memory Café

The Cafe has now been successfully running for over 11 years, and continues to be “open” on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month 10.15-11.45am.

We have many regular visitors who come every fortnight, but we also have many newcomers who rapidly become “regulars”. Visitors with memory problems should come along with their carers, e.g. husbands, wives or others.

New visitors will be made very welcome, so come along and give it a try. We are not a “clinic”, but we find that carers also benefit from the chance to chat to others in similar situations.

The setting is a normal “cafe” style, with our volunteers serving coffee, tea, soft drinks, biscuits and fruit, for which there is no charge, though we do have a voluntary contribution box. There is a lot of chatter and constant exchange of thoughts and ideas, and there is either entertainment or a visit from a speaker on a topical matter of interest.

Parking is very easy just outside for “BlueBadge” holders or in the nearby car park. Contact Sue Rowley on 01454 412941 for further information, or just turn up, and we are sure you will enjoy the experience and the fun.
