Thursday 23rd February 2012
Vital Information on Drugs for Parents in Thornbury and Surrounds
1-3pm, Youth Block, Thornbury Baptist Church, Gillingstool, Thornbury BS35 2EG

Worried about your son or daughter and drugs and alcohol? If so, you are not alone - it is one of the major worries faced by parents today. Come and find out some of the facts surrounding this issue from Sam Drew, who is part of South Gloucestershire’s Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Service. It will be part of an introduction to ‘How to Drug Proof Your Kids’.

This is an innovative and interactive course that will benefit every parent concerned about drugs, including alcohol. The course will take place over the following 5 Thursday afternoons, 1st–29th March inclusive, from 1-3pm. You can decide on February 23rd whether you want to continue with the whole course.

The course will be run by Bev Hope-Bell and Sally Heath who have both trained as accredited presenters of How to Drug Proof Your Kids. Bev, a father and grandfather, used to be a police officer and Sally, a mother of sons in their 20s, used to be a secondary school teacher and is still actively involved in youth work in Thornbury. We are convinced, from the evidence of those who have attended previous courses, that it is very helpful for parents in allaying fears and building real relationships with their children. It is aimed at parents who have children aged between 8 and 14 years old.

Parents attending will discover some of the facts about drug use in our community and learn strategies for communicating with their children and encouraging them to make informed choices about drug use. The good news is that you don’t have to become an expert on drugs to be aware of how your children might be at risk. We will tell you some of the facts about drug use, but more importantly we will help you to engage with your children, discuss drugs with them and give them the means to make sensible and informed choices. The course is free, although we will ask for a voluntary contribution of £10 for the parents’ handbook which goes with the course.

Places will be limited and can be booked by calling Sally on 01454 419574 or e-mail below. For more details visit the DPYK website below or contact Sally. How to Drug Proof Your Kids is a community based programme developed in conjunction with national charity Care for the Family and drugs education charity, Hope UK.
