Thornbury Horticultural Society Summer Flower Show
Armstrong Hall Complex
At the end of last year Bob purchased a letter which to his amazement contained an article about the Society from Catherine Sarah Dale to a friend in London. It says that her brother and some gentlemen of the town formed the Thornbury Horticultural Society and is dated July 29th 1836. This is the earliest reference to the society known and we are still going strong with a small but dedicated committee.
Shows have been held in Thornbury Castle, bottom of the Golf Course, Mundy Playing Fields, and now we are in the Armstrong Hall. We have retained the vegetable classes and flower classes as per the original schedule from Thornbury Castle. We have added over the years classes for floral art, this year's classes being called ‘Going for Gold’, ‘Bright and Beautiful’, and ‘An Honest Pint’. Also preserves, cooking, handicrafts, for which the WI has provided a challenge cup. Photographic classes for entrants with other interests, i.e. wildlife, wheels, a Thornbury event and 4 clocks. Children’s classes such as decorated paper plate, painting of granddad, a design for next years cover for the Summer Show Schedule.
Supporters, helping, entering or visiting the show on Saturday 4th August 2012 at 2:00pm. Tea and cakes will be available. Schedules available from J.T. Owens, Thornbury Library, Town Hall and The Garden Shop.
