Retired and rescued greyhounds will be greeting shoppers, as volunteers seek to raise awareness about re-homing and raise funds for Gloucestershire-based charity Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE).

Each year the charity, which is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of abused and abandoned greyhounds and lurchers, re-homes some 800 dogs, from puppies to older dogs.

Volunteers will be at Tesco collecting donations towards the cost of care for the rescue dogs as they await new homes, as well as explaining what wonderful pets they can make.

They will also be hoping for potential homes for dogs currently awaiting homes, including four year old ex-racer Alfie, currently in foster care, who enjoys home life with other dogs, is house-trained and well behaved around food and toys and can be left for several hours at a time and friendly lurcher Kent, a former stray currently in kennels, who needs an active home offering lots of fun and exercise and which would continue his training.

The organiser of this event for GRWE, Kirstin Finning said: “We are so grateful to Tesco for their hospitality which allows us to show people what wonderful pets greyhounds and lurchers make, being loving, loyal and very easy-going and contrary to belief, not needing lots of exercise. With so many beautiful dogs awaiting homes every little bit of awareness and support helps.”
