Friends of Filnore Woods Work Morning
Thornbury Leisure Centre
From the Leisure Centre car park, cross the field to our white toolshed.
Possibly dry on Wednesday (25th) for work morning. Priority job will be temporary repairs to steps up from the footbridge. Then some of the path edging through the valley woodland. I had hoped to cut some new wood for these repairs but just haven't managed it so we shall have to use old bits for now.
Good work last time clearing round the hedge we coppiced in the spring. Re-growth is very good although one hawthorn stool didn't recover. The new plants we put in are also doing OK although not as vigorous as the coppice re-growth.
In November we should start coppicing in the woodland again. We didn't do any woodland coppicing last year. This time we shall cut at the bottom of the slope in the same part of the woods we did before. The aim is to let light in so that ground flora can grow and to create a mosaic of habitats by successional cutting of different areas (called coupes). The wood we harvest is a by-product which we can use to generate a bit of income. We shall also thin out the trees a bit so that those remaining can develop better.
Work mornings are usually from 10am till 12pm on the second Sunday and fourth Wednesday of every month. You will be most welcome.
