Thornbury Picture House: Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty
Cossham Hall, Thornbury
Matthew Bourne’s ballet Sleeping Beauty set to the music of Tchaikovsky starring Dominic North and Hannah Vassallo is coming to Thornbury, a fabulous gothic tale for all ages.
The story begins in 1890, the year of the ballet’s first performance, at the christening of the heroine Princess Aurora. It was the fin de siècle period when fairies, vampires and decadent opulence fed the gothic imagination.
As Aurora grows into a young woman, we move forward in time to the more rigid, uptight Edwardian era; a mythical golden age of long summer afternoons, croquet on the lawn and new dance crazes. Years later, awakening from her century long slumber, Aurora finds herself in the modern day, a world more mysterious and wonderful than any fairy story!
Filmed at the Bristol Hippodrome in May 2013, this production will appeal to the younger generation as well as traditional dance fans who will enjoy the masterful choreography and the trademark wit expected from Matthew Bourne.
Doors open at 7pm. Tickets £10 or £8 for those over 65 years and under 16 years from Thornbury Town Hall or by calling 01454 412272.
