Berkeley dig reveals past
In the grounds of the Edward Jenner Museum, experts from Bristol University have discovered a range of exciting finds.
Archaeologists had been digging just two days when they found an intact musket ball dating from the English Civil War in 1645. Other finds include 18th Century clay pipes and pottery dating from the 13th century.
The purpose of the dig is to identify archaeological remains of a 9th or 10th century Anglo-Saxon nunnery chapel. References found in historical documents to abbots and abbesses, a nunnery and an abbey in Berkeley make it certain that some form of Saxon religious building once stood in the area.
Fieldwork is being undertaken from 22 May to 15 June 2007. Visitors on a Joint Ticket to Berkeley Castle and the Edward Jenner Museum are being invited to watch the dig unfold and discuss artefacts found with the experts.
