Understanding Modern Art: Expression and Experimentation
10.30am-4.30pm, Chantry, 52 Castle Street, Thornbury, BS35 1HB

Why did it feel so different to be a ‘modern artist’? How did the ideas of Darwin and Sigmund Freud impact upon art? Why did many artists turn their backs on the Western art tradition of the Academies and look to other cultures for inspiration?
Can we trace the roots of abstraction and an interest in the formal properties of art - colour, shape and line – back to previous centuries?
Today we will explore the themes of dreams, primitivism, self expression and formalism. We will ask: how did artists engage with the new individualism and scientific thinking of the modern age?

Lynne Gibson is an experienced tutor with a vast collection of slides and her talks are always illuminating and inspiring.

The day-school costs £25. To book a place please ring Pauline Darley on 01454 416291.
