Berkeley Castle has long been associated with the terrible death of Edward II and stories of his agonised screams have been passed down through the generations. Last year saw the first ever Ghost Hunt at the Castle on the anniversary of Edward’s death and over 450 people attended.
This year the first of two more Ghost Hunts takes place, hosted again by Richard Felix. Luckily most of the ghosts that are reputed to haunt the nearly 900 year old building appear to be benign. Marketing Manager Tim Davies said “The spirits we’ve experienced or have been told about seem to be interested in what goes on in the Castle day by day. There’s a certain amount of mischief, such as tugging on hair and tapping on shoulders, as well as apparitions seen. We can’t guarantee you’ll see anything during the Ghost Hunt, but we had reports of strange happenings last year!”
The event is run by Derby Gaol and tickets for the event must be pre booked in advance by contacting them. There will also be a separate ticket-only talk in the 14th Century Great Hall by Richard Felix before the first tour begins at 8pm. Tours will continue until the special and last Midnight Tour taken by Richard Felix himself.
During the tour you can expect to hear the stories of the Castle and its ghosts while experiencing the building as it gradually gets darker and the atmosphere changes. The tour will take you through the usual public rooms, but dimly lit and atmospheric.
Outside will be a small psychic fair and there will be the opportunity to see some paranormal experiments too.
The Tea Rooms will be open during the evening for hot drinks and refreshments.
Charles Berkeley said “We thoroughly enjoyed our Ghost Hunt last year and due to the huge amount of interest shown afterwards we are holding two more. If you know the Castle by day, come and see what it is like at night – it is a very different building, and you never know what may happen!”
