Tuesday 7th to Friday 10th July, Doors open 6.45 for 7.15 start, Thornbury Leisure Centre
This is a wonderful 'home grown' musical which started life as an 'A' Level exam piece and was then expanded by Janet Halfyard, now a Senior Academic at The Birmingham Conservatoire. It was orchestrated by Nigel Davies and directed by Barbie at Marlwood School in 1989 and offers hundreds of opportunities for straight acting, singing and or dancing in every sized part possible, whether you are 6 or 86!
The music is a glorious mixture of traditional folk, Victoriana and modern, needing a large orchestra to accompany the 300 strong cast.
The Wigan Girls traces the fight for work and dignity by the coal pit brow lasses of Wigan, championed by social researcher: Arthur Munby, and how their plight and fight became a beacon for improving the rights and conditions of many manual labourers of the era. The story shows the divisions between North and South, rich and poor, plus men and women, in a script and music that are full of grit, humour and poignancy, enhanced by stunning images of the original women and the working conditions of the poor.
Tickets £8, Concessions £6. Box Office: Town Hall or 01454 416291 from June 16. FACTS £6.

Thornbury Baptist Church Hall
Thornbury is full of talent! Can you sing, dance, juggle or impersonate Gordon Brown? Do you play the saxophone or the spoons, does your dog do tricks or can you make your grandmother disappear?
We are looking for any and every talent to take to the stage, so we can find an act to rival Paul Potts, George Sampson or Susan Boyle and raise funds for ACT (Arts and Community in Thornbury).
There will be qualifying heats (with three tame judges!!) in the afternoon with a grand final that evening, where the audience will choose the winners and the judges will give the prizes.
If you would like to take part, just provide the details asked for and the TGT organisers will get you up on that stage for your minutes of fame. Go on, you know you want to!
Please download an entry form from our website below and return it to the email address below, or to 38 Manor Walk, Thornbury, South Glos BS35 1SP. Please note that all acts must be appropriate for a family audience.
Why not book the date in your diary now, as it's sure to be great fun, whether you're participating or just cheering everyone on! All proceeds will be donated to ACT's project to build a theatre and arts centre in Thornbury.

ACT: Arts and Community in Thornbury
A Project to Build a New Performance and Arts Venue in Thornbury
Arts and Community in Thornbury has been set up as an independent (not for profit) organisation solely with the purpose of developing and building a new 'state of the art' performance venue in Thornbury.
It will serve the town and local area, bridging the arts facilities vacuum between Bristol, Cheltenham and Bath.

Why do we want a new performance venue?
Thornbury, with its surrounding area, has a wealth of artistic talent that deserves a fine centre for performances and exhibitions. Thornbury has many groups in all branches of the arts, which perform to a high standard and attract enthusiastic support. Several of the groups have received awards for their performances.
On the professional side, Thornbury Arts Festival has produced a week-long celebration of the arts for over 35 years. Each year there are several performances which are sold out. There would be room for more professional groups and artistes to entertain local people throughout the year.
What we think is lacking is a contemporary venue for better display of local talent as well as performances by visiting professionals. Our vision is centred on a performance hall or theatre. It would be an energetic and exciting venue for all the community. At the heart would be the cafe and bar, available to local people at all times of the day.
What progress has been made so far?
At a public meeting in the Armstrong Hall in November 2005, an enthusiastic audience of almost 200 people voted overwhelmingly to support ACT's proposal to raise funds to build a new performance venue in Thornbury. In principle Thornbury Town Council supports the aspirations of ACT to develop a performance venue in the town.In February 2006 a volunteer steering group was established. Also a small group of volunteer consultants has been formed to share their expertise in developing this project. The steering group has been responsible for converting the organisation to a Limited Company and setting up financial systems, commencing with the banking of a starting fund of £4,000 from the profits of The Thornbury Plays (2000). It is currently working on an application to obtain Charitable status. Our task is enormous and the cost will be considerable.
